Rock is often associated with "the band". Specifically, artists playing instruments together and appreciated as one unit. Rock can be a symbol of different things of rebellion, of authenticity. The intention behind this kind of music genre is that rock music may have some quality that can shake up people's perceptions. Or that it "tells the truth". Whenever people talk about a new transgressive phenomenon, rock is frequently used as a comparison point. (i.e. "That's what they said about rock n' roll!").

Rooted in rebellion and defiance, rock music emerged as a powerful voice for the youth. Iconic or classic rock groups have made an enduring impact on the music scene, moulding the sound and cultural landscape of a whole generation. With electrifying guitar solos and potent vocals, these bands have crafted ageless music that still connects with fans of every generation. like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Pink Floyd, to mention but a few have left a lasting legacy on the rock music scene. Rock music has also been seen to have an influence on everything from the fashion industry to art movements and societal attitudes.

The Nigerian rock music industry evolution started from the ’70s. It was noticed for its mix of creativity that is taking over the country’s music industry. It was kind of difficult for hip-hop rappers to be taken seriously in Nigeria in the late 70s when hip hop music was really making waves in the United States. This was due to the emergence and reign of high life and fuji music in the country as at then. It took some courage for Ibrahim Salim Omari, a member of the American rap group the Sugar Hill Gang, who came to Nigeria in exile in 1980 to release the first rap single in Nigeria titled I am an African. He also collaborated with Nigerian musicians like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. As at that time, his songs did not get the desired acceptance for it to do well, yet it laid a foundation for other upcoming rappers in Nigeria. Music artists such as Nasty C, M.I Abaga, Elder, Vector, Olamide, Ice prince, Jesse Jags to mention but a few, have since raised the bar for the hip hop/rap music genre in Nigeria, with a lot of upcoming artist also trying to claim their space in the rap music category.
